Lieutenant Hornblower

C.S. Forester (1950). Historical Novel.  Horatio Hornblower commences his career in the Royal Navy as an inexperienced midshipman in January 1794. Through a series of challenges and adventures both in and out of combat, Hornblower discovers he is actually talented in both seamanship and leadership. People initially thought Hornblower a dullard but later grew to respect him.  The Hornblower series is recommended reading for all United States Naval officers as it offers relevant insight into the trials and tribulations of entering leadership.  The unique isolation incumbent upon leadership.  In one of the episodes Hornblower is tasked with taking an enemy French ship by silent approach.  Hales, one of Hornblower's men, begins having a seizure. Because silence was essential and was the only thing keeping the men alive, Hornblower strikes Hales and inevitably kills him.  The mission is overall successful but Hornblower is racked with guilt over Hales death.
